NSW Flood Watch - 24/08/15

FLOOD WATCH FOR ILLAWARRA, SOUTH COAST AND THE LACHLAN AND NEPEAN RIVER VALLEYS

Issued at 12:54 pm EST on Monday 24 August 2015
##

Note: This Flood Watch provides early advice for possible future flooding along all rivers, creeks and overland flow paths within a nominated valley [See note below].

A low pressure system is expected to form near the central parts of the NSW coast and bring heavy rain to the Illawarra and South Coast later during Monday and Tuesday. Further rain in the central west of the state is also expected to cause flooding in the Lachlan Valley downstream of Wyangala Dam

At this stage there is a greater than 70% chance of flooding in the following river valleys from Tuesday onwards:

1. Lachlan River valley downstream of Wyangala Dam, including the Belubula River - moderate rural flooding

2. Nepean River - minor flooding

3. Illawarra District - moderate to major flooding

4. South Coast - local flash flooding

Severe Weather Warnings are also being issued for this event.

This Flood Watch means that people living or working along rivers and creeks must monitor the latest weather forecasts and warnings and be ready to move to higher ground should flooding develop. Flood Warnings will be issued if Minor Flood Level is expected to be exceeded at key sites along the main rivers for which the Bureau of Meteorology provides a flood warning service. Across NSW over 70% of Flood Watches are followed by flooding within the catchment.
