Once upon a time there was a cold front who lived in the Southern Ocean.

Mr Cold Front was just like any other cold front. He liked to make brief journeys into low latitude countries like Chile, South Africa and New Zealand. It's believed he even owns property in Strahan, Tasmania. He also likes playing cat and mouse with his mate Warmy.

This week he decided to go on another tour of Australia, but this time he wanted to go a bit further north than he had for the last three years.

So he decided to pack his things.

He collected all the ice and snow that he could, so that he wouldn't get stuck on his way back to the Southern Ocean. He also chatted to his friends the Southerlies about helping him make the trip. They were very excited. However in Australia some of the meteorologists and their friends in the media were getting a little worried.

His first day in Australia was a Friday. He wanted to ease himself into the trip and therefore only spent the day looking around the southern fringes of Western Australia.

By the second day of his trip his friends the Southerlies could no longer contain their excitement. Mr Cold Front was swept across all of South Australia into southern parts of the Northern Territory and he almost made it to the east coast before midnight.

By Sunday morning Mr Cold Front had finished his whirlwind tour of the vast majority of Australia. In his wake he deposited snow across the Great Dividing Ranges, hail on the southern coasts and a healthy dose of rain on southern farmland.

Once Mr Cold Front left Australia and went into the Tasman Sea he found that he was slowing down. He pushed and he pushed further east, but he kept on slowing down. At last he looked back and he saw that Lowy the low pressure system had grabbed his tail!

This was bad news for Mr Cold Front. He had already left behind all of his cold air in Australia and the southerlies were no longer at his back, but were enjoying playing in the cold air on the western side of Lowy.

Mr Cold Front then resigned himself to his fate and slowly trudged through the heavy warm air on his way to New Zealand.

On Tuesday he looked back and realised that his younger brother had decided to follow his path. He shouted back to his brother "Don't come this way! Watch out for Lowy!" But he couldn't hear him and got trapped on the same path.

A week later, when Mr Cold Front and his brother were safe in the Southern Ocean again they were collecting fresh ice and snow. They decided that big trips into Australia were dangerous and, at least for this year, they stay a little closer to home when touring the Australian countryside.
